The best thing about them was they played because they loved to play. They have hours or live recordings that were never made in a studio because they hated the hassle of studio recording and didn't care that it would make them more money. Besides that they were a great jam band that would improvies while playing on stage for hours. While not a flashy player Jerry Garcia was amazing at just improvising and playing for hours on end.

I couldn't believe this was a serious question. Maybe I'm biased because I was raised on the Dead, but they're musical geniuses. Any band that can put so many different styles of music together at once and have it sound that beautiful is AMAZING, and there is no question about that. Their music promoted a kind of peace that I've never heard from any other band. Listening to the Dead is not something you do, it's something you experience. It's raw music...the music that isn't about what you wear, or who you know, or how hot your body is...it's just about jamming. It's about getting lost in the music. Even when you DANCE to the Dead you just let the music take control.

I personally love everything about their music, and even the memories I have of it. I remember being probably 2 years old and watching my mom in the kitchen cooking and singing 'Saint Steven with a rose, in and out of the garden he goes...' along with her radio. My mom always said she was suprised I wasn't born at a show.

There is more freedom in their playing than you are used to. Listen without judging or associating the music with "Dead Heads".

If you just listen like a child, you will experience what's so Grate.

DON'T JUDGE- LISTEN! When trying to explain their greatness, "Statements just seem vain at last".

Shut down the judgements in your brain and try this http://www.archive.org/details/gd77-02-26.sbd.owen.23808.sbeok.shnf

One of a million reasons why the Dead was great is that you could have gone to 200 concerts and never have heard the same set lsit twice. Every show was different.

I've wondered that myself. Personally I think they suck and the only way you can tolerate the music is if you sit around and smoke out all day.

You obviously have not listened to much of their music, and you have definetely not ever been to one of their performances. If you have, then you would know.
