I graduated last year with a 2:1 in Psychology which I worked quite hard for!! But I don't really use it and I probably never will! I expect it worked in my favour when I applied for my current job (they were looking for a graduate) but its not like I use it (I work as a recruitment consultant!)

Mine is in Economics and Business - 9 years ago. Don't really need it these days - but yes it certainly opens doors for you when you start. Overtime employers are more interested in your experiences than what subject you studied in year two and if you organised a ski trip..!

No one uses their liberal arts degrees. Psyc needs a grad degree to do much. IN college you can choose any major independent of how many jobs there are avaiable in that field. In the real world there might only be 1 opening for every 4 psych majors. Plus jobs are so hard to come by people take whatever they can get.

I'm an aeronautical engineer and I use mine every day.
I also know of psychology graduates who are involved in the design of aircraft, as a large part of the task is controlling the flow of information to the pilots now known as Crew Resource Management.

You are right, I guess for some profession, it really is not necessary. But take the sciences for example you really need a good degree in Physics and mathematics to be an astronomer or professions along that line or a damn good one in chemistry to be able to make WMD.

It depends, thats what I think
