Is that a Catholic tradition? Is it American or from another country. I remember this vaguely from when I was a kid, but would like to know more details.

I believe you're referring to the twelve days of Christmas. It is a Catholic tradition, stemming from the church year. In the church year, Christmas Day is the first day of Christmas, and there are twelve days after that in the Christmas season. Then comes Epiphany, which is the celebration of the Wise Men coming. That's why, in liturgical churches, they don't take down their trees untill late January.

It sounds like Advent, where the (mostly) kids open a small gift each day from the beginning of the Advent season to Christmas day. It starts four weeks before Christmas; I believe it's primarily a Catholic tradition, although I also knew a Lutheran family who had the same tradition. In reference to the answerer above, I'm Jewish, and it's definitely not a Jewish tradition, as we Jews don't celebrate Christmas at all.

As far as I'm aware, that's a Jewish tradition which is part of Hanukkah. Every Catholic (and American for that matter) I have ever known opens all gifts either on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning. However individual families have their own unique traditions.

I was raised Lutheran and no one ever gave gifts for Advent, nor did anyone ever hear of doing that.

Sounds to me like Advent - You may have seen the commercial Advent Calendars in the shops where you open a window each day in the lead up to Christmas to reaveal a chocolate.

The traditional Advent Calendars I have seen have little gifts hanging from the bottom and are actually little gifts that are opened each day. It all starts at the start of Advent, which is four weeks before Christmas and represents the start of the Christian Church Year.

i like the belief of doing a soup or toy stress, or something. it relatively is a convention which will make you the two experience stable - and you will bypass it right down to childrens (if that's interior the plan) you need to seek for "Christmas activities" on your city. there is gotta be something relaxing happening. as an occasion, in my city, there are easy gala's interior the park, and yule villages interior the city the place you may walk around and in basic terms drink warm chocolate. Do you have any well known Christmas movies? you need to do a "action picture pageant" one night with Christmas munchies. How some night with acquaintances the place you each and each wrap up and replace something you already very own? One individual's junk is yet somebody else's treasure :) you need to do it over wine and play Christmas track and ask all of us to dress up. bypass procuring - yet make certain you do no longer purchase something! you need to spend an afternoon vacationing "gruesome" human beings - just to cause them to happy. Are you everywhere close to a nation-state? Does it snow the place you're? possibly you may make a convention of in basic terms getting interior the vehicle and employing via "Christmassy" factors while you pay attention to Christmas track. My pal has a convention the place in line with annum, he unearths new (generally obscure) Christmas track, and makes CD's that he passes out as presents. i might like to have a convention the place i ought to bypass to a cabin for a weekend and ski (or no longer) :) - yet it relatively is amazingly high priced. i like those "Christmas Calendars" with little goodies in the back of the doors - you need to each and each get one for yourselves, and open one door each and on a daily basis finest as much as Christmas. i'm out of ideas at this factor .. i will attempt to think of of a few extra
