OK , here is the big secret! A bra size is determined by measuring first under the bust. Add 5-6 inches to this measurement (whatever gives you an even number) That is the band size: 34, 36, 38 etc.
Then measure around the fullest part of the bust. The second measurement will be bigger. Subtract your first measurement from that. Ex. A 40in. measurement (second) combined with a 36 band size (first) will result in a 4 inch difference.
Here is the code: up to 1 inch (difference) =a
2 inches =b
3 inches =c
4 inches=d
5 inches=dd
etc.
beyond dd, women have to have custom made bras.
This is the basic formula.

For all of those who don't know, there is a things called "sister sizing". That is, cup size does not determine the cup volume. The cup size is relative to the band size. So, in other words, a 40A is much, much bigger than a 28DD. You cannot compare cup size (A, B, C... etc.) for the actual size of the breasts. Most people tend to think so, and they are wrong.

A 34a has the same cup volume as a 32b or a 30c or even a 28d, but they only have different band size.

I am a 34a and they fit in all the sizes above. If you don't believe me, search it up. It's called 'sister sizing'. Or you can go in a store and compare the different bras.

All A-cup bras do not have the same cup volume, neither does all the Bs, or Cs or Ds.

This girl wears a 30b and even though she is a "B-cup", her boobs are smaller than mine. So for someone that says, "I'm a C-cup, I wear a 28c." You might picture her with a small waist and huge boobs compared to her size. False. For me, who apparently is considered to have "miniature boobs that don't even exist", because I'm an "A-cup", I have bigger boobs than someone with a 28c. This is just an example.

I hope I made it clear, because nobody seems to understand the truth of bra sizing. :)

I am with you on this on but from what I gather the 36 means that it how many inches around you are, in that area of course.
The a,d,c,d, etc. is the cup size or the diameter of your breast.
I hate to go to get a new bra because I am never sure if I am a B or C cup so I end up trying on about 10 or more before I get it right..
I hope this helps some.

The number is the circumference in inches of the trunk (chest area or ribcage) measured at the point just under the breast. The letter is the size of the breast cup, which can be determined by the difference in measurements between the trunk and the bust, which includes the breasts themselves at the fullest point. It's probably easier just determining cup size by trial and error.

Imagine different size balls (i.e. golf ball, tennis ball, softball, volleball, basketball). Each one I wrote is larger than the one before. Breast cups are the same way with AA being the smallest, followed by A, and so on...

The number is the band size, the measurement around your ribcage. The letter is the cup size, the size of the boob. They run from smallest AA to largest like a J or something! Whoa!

it's the cup size -
36, 34, etc. is how big you are around the chest, under your breasts
A,B , C etc is the difference between the biggest part of your breasts and the part underneath -thus determines the size cup you need to hold it in.

Measurement is taken just under the breast(that's the 36" part). Then a measurement is taken at the max bustline.the difference in inches determines the cup size A,BorC
