I think it's a combination of three things.
Yes, in certain areas, our school system needs lots of help. It doesn't help that Bush dumbed down the system with "No Child Left Behind."
Another reason is trying to sound cool when they type.
Lastly, I think the people who write unintelligibly are used to IMing and chat rooms, which uses and encourages sloppy typing and slang

I totally agree with you about the language skills of the "kids" these days. However it could possibly not be their fault. The question box takes a while to catch up with typing and they may not be reading it back before they post it.
I think that street cred could be partly to blame with the text culture meaning that gr8 is just as acceptable nowadays as great. I am a true believer in learning to spell correctly - how on earth can you find anything on Google if you can't even spell what you're looking for.
I actually think that the internet will help people with spelling because they will have to get it correct in order to find what they are looking for.

I think it is a matter of the acceptable language used on the internet. People seem to feel that rules of language and grammar do not apply and speak in computer IM Emal "shorthand". The problem that exists is that standard english is the language of money and commerce and students fail to realize that mastering the english language is key to being successful in any field.

I think it's a combination of our failing public school system and being cool. Fortunately, a medium such as this helps. Children are using what they know and learning to participate in Y! A. It's a good thing.

I think maybe they think its cool to post in slang like dat and wut.. etc. Although a lot of people never learn to spell or anything because a lot of teachers ... even college professors don't really subtract points for misspelling words and don't really seem to care if its wrong.

i don't think it's either, people don't do it to be cool or because they can't be bothered it's simply because it's faster which isn't necessarily a bad thing
