Stripping the membranes is where a health care provider will separate your bag of water from the cervix, it is not intended to break your water, however, it may. It may also cause infection, and may be painful for some.
The reason that we tell people that we are stripping their membranes is to "get things going" in regards to labor. This little technique is usually done during a vaginal exam at the end of pregnancy, with or without the knowledge or consent of the woman.
Stripping the membranes, we are told, is supposed to stimulate production of prostiglandins in the cervix and bring on contractions. I have heard doctors tell my clients after stripping their membranes they will have the baby in two days. While this may appear to work for some, at term it's all a guessing game. There is no scientific work to date that can back up the routine procedure of stripping membranes.
You may want to ask your care provider to avoid this procedure if you are worried about the effects and risks. Or you may want to avoid vaginal exams during the end of pregnancy for the same reasons, because unfortunately the cannot accurately predict when we will give birth.

Well. ask if you can be induced like a week early. I see no problem with that. I think you should not do it if the doc. does not want you to. I think that you need to wait another week before they strip your membranes and hopefully you might just go into labor by your self. It will work if you are in early labor.. it might take a few days but it usually will help.

I don't know anything about getting my membranes stripped. My water broke while I was in the hospital. (They were actually getting ready to send me home) If your pregnancy goes much longer than 40 weeks, your doctor will want to induce. It will be better for you and your baby in the long run if he/she decides not to come on time. Since you're starting to dialate, you're in early labor. You don't have long to go. I'd say a few days tops. My mother had seven children. Only one was born naturally before her due date (one day early...) One was born on her due date (induced) My 13 year old sister was induced because my mom went nearly two weeks passed her due date. My youngest sister was early and induced because of how big she was getting. (She ended up being nearly 12lbs!) Anyways, if the doctor thinks it would be better and the baby is ready, I see nothing wrong with being induced. I told my husband if our daughter went much passed her due date I was getting induced. Luckily she came four days later. You're almost there, hunny. hang in there!

You can have them stripped, but it doesnt always enduce labor on its own. So you can end up with a dry baby (if the procedure breaks your water and labor doesnt progress), which complicates things greatly if labor doesnt progress within so many hours.
They'll have to try inducing you with medication if it doesnt work, which makes your labor harder and longer and more painful.
If you still dont have her within so many hours of that, they might have to do c-section. Its rare, but its a possibility.
Its just not natural, and your body isnt made to enter labor that way. Not to mention the stress it puts on the baby.
I'd wait as long as you can before you go that route.

Having your membranes stripped may send you into labor *if* you are already close to it anyhow. So even though it's uncomfortable it might be worth it.

If they break your water, your baby is coming! I have my water broke both times and within 5 hours, my babies arrived. The labor was very intenese. So if you are one that doesnt like pain, get the epidural. Makes it quite enjoyable. I have done it both ways, natural and drugs.

I have no respect for any doctor that would recommend this option.
