The sky is blue partly because air scatters short-wavelength light in preference to longer wavelengths. Combined, these effects scatter (bend away in all directions) some short, blue light waves while allowing almost all longer, red light waves to pass straight through. When we look toward a part of the sky not near the sun, the blue color we see is blue light waves scattered down toward us from the white sunlight passing through the air overhead. Near sunrise and sunset, most of the light we see comes in nearly tangent to the Earth's surface, so that the light's path through the atmosphere is so long that much of the blue and even yellow light is scattered out, leaving the sun rays and the clouds it illuminates red.
Scattering and absorption are major causes of the attenuation of radiation by the atmosphere. Scattering varies as a function of the ratio of the particle diameter to the wavelength of the radiation. When this ratio is less than about one-tenth, Rayleigh scattering occurs in which the scattering coefficient varies inversely as the fourth power of the wavelength. At larger values of the ratio of particle diameter to wavelength, the scattering varies in a complex fashion described, for spherical particles, by the Mie theory; at a ratio of the order of 10, the laws of geometric optics begin to apply.

The sky is blue due to so-called Rayleigh scattering.
"White" light is not a single color, but the sum of all colors in the visual spectrum. When sunlight enters the atmosphere, some of it is scattered by the air molecules. Shorter wavelengths such as blue & green light are scattered more than longer wavelengths such as orange and red light.
This also explains why the sun appears red at sunset. The setting sun shines through more layers of air than the noonday sun (due to geometry), and more blue-green light is scattered out, leaving the orange-red light we see in a typical sunset.

the sky is blue because the suns rays hit the earth as white light, white light is made up of all the coulours of the rainbow, when it hits the sky, the stratosphere alllows all the coulours to pass through except blue which it bends, and that makes it visisble for us to see, that is also why water in the ocean is blue but if you take a cup and look at it is in fact clear

as was already mention, white light consists of all the colors. when light enters our atmosphere the other colors are absorbed by the water droplets and the blue light is reflected off them into our eyes. whenever you see a color it's because that color is not being absorbed by what you are looking at. i used to ask the same question all the time.

da sun's ray as u know is composed of not just 1 colour but da vibgyor. the blue colour of sun's rays being of shorter wavelength does not pass thru da atmosphere but gets scattered. hence da sky is blue.
