I live in California, and I'm about to turn 18 on January 27th. My friends are about 13 years old (I know, sad, it's a long story though), and when their parents say it's okay to see a rated R movie, we don't end up going because no one can take us. So does anyone know all the rules on the ages for the movie theater??? Can I buy rated R tickets for me AND my friends when I'm 18??? I've asked everyone I could think of, but no one I know is sure! I want to be able to go see a rated R movie without an adult having to be there with me, but I don't know when I'm allowed to.

Just to let everyone know, I wouldn't be irresponsible and let them see a rated R movie unless their parents said it's okay.

I would REALLY appreciate serious answers.
Please and thank you!

U would think thats how it works but it doesn't. If ur under the age of 17 some one 21 or older has to buy the ticket for u. SO even though u can buy ur ticket u wont be able to buy them for ur friends. When I turned 18 I thought I could buy tickets for my friends but unfortunately it doesn't work that way :-( So what we did was I bought the R ticket and they all just snuck in but make sure to go to different windows and dont go together, cuz if the movie is fairly new they'll be watching (we got caught a couple times)

~good luck :-)

The policy of someone having to be 17 and older to purchase a ticket for an R rated movie (without a parent with them)is a guideline that is set by the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America). They view movies and set a rating based on their own criteria. This is not a LAW, but it is most theaters policy to follow this. The ultimate decision then is left to the theater owners to decide, but most (especially the large chains) follow these guidelines and have it a part of their policy.

How about if I'm 17 and turning 18 on the 27th of February and I wanna see Fifty Shades of Grey opening night? Can I buy my own ticket? Do I have to take my birth certificate if I don't have an ID? Lol

17 to buy the tickets but alot of the times they will card you on the way in if you look under 17...meaning u must have a chaperone or atleast someone over the age of 17 with you to be admitted into the movie!

You have to be 17 to purchase a ticket, but you have to be 21 to purchase tickets for people younger than 17.
