The answer is C. But what's not widely discussed is the fact that the French, who laid claim to the area, really didn't own it! Native Americans had been living on the land for 20,000 years or more! It was the biggest land fraud scheme in history!

Definitely C. The land was originally owned by Spain, but after Napolean defeated them, he sold off the land to us. Jefferson snapped it up, much to the anger of the Spanish once they were independent once again.
