In history the french had the best cuisine, cheeses, pastries and wine, in Europe. The other countries did not have the delicacies, or the fancy table settings for large parties. Remember Marie Antoinette when there was no bread, she said "let them it cake" for the rich had richer and fancier foods.
The vineyards have been growing grapes since that time and have some of the best wine and cheese even today.
So when people thought that something was different or delicious they would say it was french.
