bill russell was a winner in grade school, high school, college and the nba....maybe its because he belongs to the era long time past but these people who think of others as the greatest never bother to look up russell's winning accomplishments...11 rings in 13 nba campaigns says it all and he even played in 12 finals....no player ever has ever achieved 12 finals in 13 seasons and to say no one will ever again is a safe bet....being great should never be about personal records, flashy plays, or scoring many points...it should be about winning and there is no bigger winner than the great Bill Russell

Reggie Lewis was very good. Paul Pierce is a little better. Bird may have been the most talented Celtic ever.

The best however in my opinion, was Bill Russell. All he did was win championships (11 in 13 seasons), the last two coming as a player-coach. Winning is the bottom line in the NBA and no one was better at it than Russell.

I'd give the edge to Larry Bird over Bill Russell. Russell was an amazing player who won so many titles, but he had one of the best coaches ever in Auerbach and such a great team around him, Bird was a great competitor and playmaker who carried the team on his shoulders and won 2 titles, so for me it's Bird

Bill Russell was a born winner.
Larry bird was a born leader.

Larry Legend is my personal favortie player ever, but Bill Russell created a dynasty.

Too close to call.

Bill Russell.
Why?: Got a ring for each finger on his hand (9 as a player, 1 as a coach).
Why?: He's the reason that Wilt had only 1.
