According to the Highway Code the stopping distance at 60mph is 240 feet.

This now days is often not the case because of the advaces in brake technology, for example the Mercedes SLR can half that because it uses ceramic carbon brake discs, which have loads more grip.

The easy way to work out stopping distance at any speed is the following equasion -
speed muliplied speed divided by 20 plus speed will give you the stopping distance

Depends on the type and condition of the car (especially its brakes, tyres and dampers), the weight of the driver, the weight and position of any passengers and/or cargo, the type and condition of the road surface, and the speed and direction of the wind relative to the car's direction of travel. The stopping distance would even be affected by how full the fuel tank and other fluid tanks on the car are.

The formula used in the Highway Code is as follows:
Braking distance in feet = MPH^2/20
Thinking distance in feet = MPH
Stopping = Thinking + Braking
60^2/20 + 60 = 240feet
