Remember that a heater is a combustion device. If you have inadequate venting, the smoke (visible or not to you) will rise because it's lighter than oxygen. It will trip the detector because it can sense that something isn't right.

There are a number of different types of smoke detectors, and each of them have their own types of nuisance tripping. I suggest that you have your furnace cleaned/inspected before you die of carbon monoxide poisoning. This is something that should be done annually.

I included a link to a page explaining how smoke detectors work, see which one you have so you know why it is going off.

DA is right in suggesting you have the furnace checked out. If you are burning gas or oil you could have an exhaust leak that the detector is sensitive to you. Also if you burn gas or oil you really should consider seperate detector unit for CO2 detection. It's a silent killer that you don't want to encourage.
Further more most conventional smoke detectors that are part of a homes original structure are interconnected so if one unit detects something they all go off. This is a nice safety feature however when one unit is going bad and picking up false readings it can be somewhat confusing determining which unit is false alarming. If the heater checks out I would consider hiring someone to look at the smoke detectors or remove one and take it to home depot and replace them all.

Right on!! The alarms are working. Ya, I know it happened with me too. That's because of the rise in temperature. They are doing what they are supposed to. I just waved a magazine till they went off...and on...and off...and on...and off, as they finally adjusted to the new temperature (slightly warmer) conditions of my home. Yes, smoke detectors are temperamental bugars!! Thank goodness. They have saved countless lives. I must include though that I did have my home checked as well when this happened because I was concerned that maybe there was an unforeseen problem. The fire department came at my request (not a 911 call) after I made a call to a non emergency phone number to my the local fire station. They were not busy and came right over to check things out. Peace of mind, its priceless!!

I use a propane furnace to heat my house, I used to have the same problem. Its Carbon Monoxide! Check the intake and exhaust for your furnace. It may be blocked by snow or a mouse made a home out of it this summer.
This is a very dangerous situation you have. If you dont believe me, go to wal mart, buy a digital Carbon Monoxide detector and watch the numbers rise to lethal levels when your furnace kicks on. Have a technician check it out, your fire alarms are detecting the invisible killer in your house.

if all of the fire alarms are going off you might want to call the fire department and get on line later if you still have a house
