I think that there are some liberal elements beginning to appear in Islam, particularly in terms of Islamic jurisprudence, so I would hope that these will become more and more prominent.
Unfortunately, terrorists also depend largely on what the rest of the world is doing, and if there continues to be this 'ideological' war between the West & the Islamic world I don't see things changing any time soon.
I wish Islam would change also as I think it's a beautiful religion with many decent followers that has been horribly twisted and perverted by extremists.

If I analyze this correctly then this is not really about religion, but about ideology, religion is simply the motivator used. Now, you educate your youth with religious background and ideological foreground and you will get fanatics. They in return will make sure that their value system will be instilled in their children. So, it will not be any different in 50 years or 500 years. With the promise of faith freeing you and the threat of government hanging over your head what can possible change. Even if we should be able to influence one predominantly Islamic country the surrounding countries would make sure that such an effort would be smothered

That depends on politics and foreign policy of the US. One issue that really angers and births extremists is the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. However, this issue is largely unreported in the US, so there is not much chance that will ever change for the better.
So I don't think the extremist warfare will change... unless by some miracle, an understanding is made from both sides.

No...people of the Islam faith are still blaming Christians for the Crusades of the Medieval Ages. That is part of their war now.
Extreme Islamist think that people who are not part of the Islam faith "are the devil" and must "be purged from the world." Not "like the devil" but literally "are the devil"

I would like to be optimistic, but, It doesn't look like it the way things are going. Islam has been tumultuous for 1500 years...what makes it different now or in 50 years?

there already are millions of enlightened muslims.
unfortunately, there are just as many fanatical christians and jews as there are muslims. one side exacerbates the other. its a vicious cycle and this war that the yanks have started will keep the fires of hatred burning bright for generations to come. that is pretty much guaranteed.

Never. Just like any other religion, you will always have a slight percentage of rogue individuals that misinterpret their book for a cause, then brainwash others into that same twisted line of thought.
As if religion wasn't twisted enough.
