I went to my doctor's appointment today for my first check up for my first pregnancy and found out I am O- blood type. My doc tried to explain what it meant but I got lost in the building blocks story and left confused. Please help me understand in layman's terms.

Having O - blood type means that your blood has no antibodies......so if your baby turns out to have a positive blood group at birth, you'll need an injection to counter the antibodies your baby has...so that your next baby won't get affected.

Hope that helps, and congratulations :)

Ok, here goes - blood has something called an RH factor. If you have it, your type is positive - if not, it's negative. Positive blood can recieve blood from positive or negative blood types - negative only from negative. Otherwise, your body will attack the blood as a virus. This matters in pregnancy because if you a)spot and b)after you deliver, you have to get a shot of something called RhoGam, which pretty much ensures that if your baby has positive blood, your body doesn't view it as a disease or intruder and attack it. Usually, you don't need one until after you deliver - but, like I said, if you spot, they generally give you one as a precaution.

simply put, you need an injection of rhogam later in your pregnancy, and again at birth IF the baby is + blood type (which is possible if your husband/bf is +). if baby is neg, you dont need the injection. you also should get one if you bleed at any point in your pregnancy.. This prevents your body from making antibodies against + blood.. so if you had another pregnancy with a baby with a + blood type, your body would not attack it and make it sick/possibly kill it. as long as you get these shots , you are protected..
