engine on or off? after its been running all day or first start of the day? does it matter?

engine should be shut off AFTER it has been warmed up, then wait a few minutes for the oil to settle down. then check the level.

I try to check it when the car has been running for awhile. Turn off the car and wait about 5 min for the oil to drain from the crankcase. Check the level then.

This is why checking it at a gas station is a perfect time. You had to drive to get there, and it takes 5 min to fill the tank.

engine off, if it's been running let set for 5 min.then pull dipstick,wipe off insert,remove check level on stick.

the best time to check it is in the morning.park your car on a level surface,pull out the dip stick and wipe it off,put it back in and then pull it back out and read it,if its showing low,put some in it.

engine off.best before you start it up.you can check it after it has been running but it will be very hot.
