Since evolution is a natural phenomenon, and not a human process, it does not have a 'purpose' in the usual sense. But you can look at natural selection, the driving force that causes evolution, as a kind of intelligent process, just because it does have the definite goal of adapting a species to a habitat over time.

Basically, if you have these things:
-a population of a species
-a given habitat
-sexual reproduction among the members of the species
-genetic variation among the species, which leads to different physical characteristics in the individuals

Then whichever individuals have the physical traits which give them the best ability to reproduce will reproduce with the most success. Then, those genes which helped them get those physical traits will make it to the next generation, while others which were not helpful might not. The physical traits that these genes cause will prevail over time, and you have evolution.

Of course it's made up as it goes along, how else can you explain the 15 or so hominids that didn't make it, most popular being the Neanderthals. What are we, the new and improved model. Mostly we seem to be heading in a general direction of increased enlightenment or increase suitability for survival. There's no concrete plan or purpose written in stone. Evolution takes the path of increased survivability.

Evolution is an opportunity driven process in that living creatures when will presented with a food source etc. to exploit will do so and the individuals best suited to exploit that source will succeed better than the rest and pass their genes on. Id is clearly a non starter as if some "god" had designed each creature to suit it's environment then that "god" would have presumably made them perfect and made one creature for each environment. But that is not the case there are many examples of animals with pieces in them left over from their distant ancestors for instance wales have the bones of their hind feet in their bodies. Also the whale shark feeds on tiny sea creatures such a krill but we also have an air breathing animal, the blue whale which does the same thing. If you were a super intelligent designer why would you do such a thing?

If it had a defined purpose it wouldn't be evolution. A define purpose seems to say that it is already outlined and determined. The whole theory of evolution is the opposite; where as; changes accur to conform to changes in the environment or situtation. Though you might plan on taking the bus to work (is the defined purpose); it is late so you must adapt and take a cab; you evolved based on your situation. (ok ; small example but you get the point)

evolution is not random but it doesnt have a purpose, that would imply some consciuos thought. evolution is the non-random selection of random mutations. a mutation might have positive or negative consequences for survival of the individual that carries it, if negative the individual is less likely to reproduce, thus over time "positive" mutations will be more often transmitted and the offspring will become better adapted to survival in their environment. purpose is only present where artifical selection takes place eg for tamer pets or fatter pigs.

I have this horrible idea that I'm becoming drawn to intelligent creation. Evolution seems to have an arrow pointing from the simplest to the most complex - us!
An original idea gets developed into a more complex form for example the five fingered 'hand' on a limb. A good original idea which has been developed. Who is doing it?
I keep looking over my shoulder to see these guys doing this work!

Evolution, in nature, is an undirected process where traits that arise by chance tend to disappear if they disadvantage the being and expand if they are favorable.

In science, evolutionary theory is an attempt to understand the diversity of life and the distribution of traits within population. The theory (usually at the detail level) is subject to modification as more information is gained.

Neither,

Evolution is a random process that has no pre-defined purpose...it is simply the product of natural selection.

Evolution is just random. Beings evolve depending on other changes going on around the world, not the other way round. So basically, beings evolve to fit in with their ever changing physical surroundings.

"Life is not an eternal search for God: Life is an Eternal Expression of God."
What do you think of this statement? Moreover, the level of evolution that we have achieved so far only shows us how far we can truly reach. Existence is God experiencing God’s self through us and all of life. We are individual, unique, divine, aspects of the whole seeing itself through our different perspectives. This is the essence of life, to experience all things in all ways and to expand to undreamed of levels of awareness and creativity. So my main question is this. Should we not unleash ourselves from our own self-contained ideology and rhetoric and understand the unlimited nature of the universe which is God? This is Life! This is ever evolving evolution!
