How does affirmative action work in America,what's the idea behind it and how is it working out?

In my country some politicians are thinking of doing something similar for certain minorities.I heard some things about how it works in the states but would like to know more,who's entitled,who decides that,the works.Opinions are also welcome of course but please also explain why and how it works in detail if possible(links on statistics are welcome).
Hope to get answers from both sides.

Affirmative Action was instituted to "reverse the damage done by discrimination" in America.

What it really amounts to is a discriminatory quota system.

I still fail to understand how you can repair and end the evil effects of discrimination by discriminating against a different ethnic group.

Affirmative action is basically an outcome based strategy where members of certain minority groups are given preference in an effort to "level the playing field".

Personally I believe it to have been a horrific failure for several reasons, the top two of which are:

1) It mandates inefficiency by excluding people who are better trained, better qualified, and better motivated in favor of those who have become professionals at "working the system".

2) Racial discrimination is just plain wrong regardless of the classification of those being discriminated against. It has been my experience in some cases that "affirmative action" is simply a politically correct phrase meaning "white folks need not apply".

The problems of racial discrimination and equal opportunity for all are quite complex and I am not suggesting that they can simply be ignored. However, I believe the solution lies more in changing the social attitudes and world view of some disadvantaged groups in our society rather than "free ride" type strategies like affirmative action.

The premise was if I am a man and you are a woman and we do the same exact job, then I should make the same exact pay.
However, Women are still UNDERPAID, by majority.
It also guarantees, the same , regarding race. That a Black woman and a white woman would be entitled to the same pay for the same job and performance.
Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes now White Males are discrimated against, because an employer is required to have a certain amount of minorities in jobs, and if they are equal to a Black woman for example (a double minority) he may get passed up for the job simply because the empoyer wants to be seen as non-discrimintive or needs to meet some quota. So I don't think it is always far either way, but better than the alternative. Of course, they can always say Job Performance or qualifications differ.

Affirmative Action(AA) was originally a way for the Federal Government to reach out to otherwise qualified memboers of minority communities. For example, under the way AA was originally intended, ads for Federal jobs and contracting opportunities would be placed in newspapers read by minorities. AA has mutated into a racial preference set-aside program, where a ceertain amount of jobs,contracts, or school admissions are set aside for certain group members. It's wrong, it discriminates against those who've demonstarted achievement,and creates a sense of entitlement based upon race. Don't let it happen in your country.....

affirmative action is taken when a person disobey the laws or do some thing out of the ordinary. the idea is to correct people from doing to other that does not deserve to be treated a such. it working here pretty fine to me

"affirmative action" is just another name for discrimination of another sort. it is a failed experiment which has caused an even wider chasm between groups (not necessarily race related). it promotes discrimination based on age, sex, race, and every other criteria imaginable.
