to me it seems to be the most pernicious form of totalitarian regime: at least with a politcal ideology it can be overthrown by a better ideology..but religious people cling so desperately to belief [like a miser clings to money] that the conditioning is so hard to overturn...especially when the law itself is subserviant to or even constructed from religious texts.

Read George Orwell's 1984
or Brave New World by Aldous Huxley I think they will answer your question about brainwashing better than I could.
Your education isn't complete without them.
I loved the books even though they were both written by atheist.
They messed up in some areas but for people who were writing about things that happened yet they had amazing insight, about what our world is coming to.


And as for not being able to overthrow religion
When is the last time you heard of someone praying to the goddess Hera?

Yes, there is, it's called the theory of evolution.
Evolutionists, big-bang theorists, cling to this belief dispite the fact no transitional life forms have ever been found.
They cling to this belief despite the fact that nothing can come from nothing - they believe that somehow, in the vacuum of space, devoid of anything, that just the right chemicals bonded together to make what is the universe today.

I don't know I've never lived in one, I've been trying to deal with the mess we're in now. If it was peaceful I wouldn't mind.
