Is it bad to take other vitamins along with prenatal vitamins? I've been taking prenatals with 400mcg of folic acid. I give my son flinstone vitamins and will sometimes take one of his. (usually his idea) His vitamins also have 300mcg of folic acid. Would that be like an overdose of folic acid? I haven't taken any of his since I've been on prenatals, but I was just wondering. I'm 26 and trying to conceive a second child.

Yes, it is OK to take folic acid with prenatal vitamins. I wish you the best of luck with your family. May you have a safe and happy holiday season!

The additional 300mcg of folic acid is fine; it's the other vitamins that are of greater concern. There are some vitamins (Vitamin A comes to mind, but it's not the only one) you need to be careful not to take too much of, especially when pregnant, and some "prenatal" vitamins actually go over the top when it comes to percentages of RDA, never mind what you are getting from any additional vitamins! I would check with your OB about the levels you are getting. I once brought some OTC prenatals to my OB for her opinion -- certain that she would give them the thumbs up -- but was surprised when she said they contained a level of Vitamin A and a few other vitamins that she felt was potentially unhealthy and in any case not warranted.

If you like taking the Flintstone vitamins, you may just want to take those, plus additional folic acid. Goodness knows, many a pregnant woman does just that (and OBs are usually absolutely fine with that, provided you take the 2 daily that constitute an adult dose), since prenatals so often cause nausea.

I would ask your doctor. I know the folic acid plus the prenatal should be fine. But you need to be careful. There are certain vitamins and minerals that can be overdosed on. Call and ask your OB just to be safe.

The normal prenatal has 800 mcg of folic acid.

I know I"m on a prenatal at 800 mcg, plus a prescription of 1 mg of folic acid but it is because I'm having twins.

I'd talk to your Dr.

you can overdose on vitamins. Taking too much of some of them can cause a miscarriage as well (I don't remember which ones though).
