In Canada, it takes six years to become an English teacher in a public school. First you do a four-year BA in English and then you do a two-year BEd.

You need to go to a 4 year university. You would need to get a B.A. in English with a minor in Secondary Education in order to get licensure. It is a 4 year program, but it often takes some people 4.5-5 years because of the availiability of courses - they often fill fast. In order to get a job you will probably want to pursue a Master's Degree in either English or Education depending on where you live. I live in Ohio and teaching positions are hard to come because so many people want them. With a high level degree such as an M.A. or a M.Ed. you will have a much easier time finding a job. To obtain an M.A. or a M.Ed. it will take an additional 1-2 years of study after finishing your B.A.

If you have a BA in English you can do what's called lateral entry. Google it as a search topic for your state. Every state is different, but for example in North Carolina you can teach and attend classes and become a certified teacher after a year.
