If you mean how do you get there by car, you'd want to take Interstate 87 North. The I-87 begins at the Bergen County, NJ - Rockland County, NY state line west of NYC. (You didn't mention where in NJ you're coming from, so if you don't live in the metro north NJ area, you'll have to get there first.) At that point, just continue on I-87 up to Albany and then further north up into the Adirondacks. Here you'll reach the New York - Quebec border, just a few miles south of Montreal. You should definitely have your driver's license and birth certificate ready to show to customs. As an American citizen, you would not need a passport to enter Canada by car, though this wouldn't be a bad idea if you have one of course. The US Dept of State wants to change this so you would require a passport to enter Canada or Mexico by car, but so far this program has not been implemented. On the other hand, if you're flying to Montreal, you do require a passport to board the plane now. There should be plenty of direct flights to here from Newark.

Check any map or atlas, you'll see the main roads. We take a passport whenever we go to Quebec, but they'll still let you in with just your birth certificate with a photo id.
