My daughter's boyfriend tried to cook Ramen Noodles without water and created a terrible mess in my microwave last night. The dry noodles and container caught on fire. The odor smells like the worst burned popcorn smell you have every smelled. Please help. My whole house filled up with smoke. The furnace was on so it pulled the smoke through the whole house. I turned the heat off and opened up all of the doors and windows. Put a big fan at the front door and tried to exhaust the smoke out of the house. I also turned on all of the exhaust fans in the bathrooms. This morning, the house still smells bad, not quite as bad, but the kitchen is still terrible. When I opened the microwave up, that is horrible. I sprayed everything I could with Febreze and went to work. Please help. I can't stand it.

Try microwaving a bowl of vinegar. It will smell like vinegar for a little while but it should help absorb some of the smell. It will also loosen up any baked-on crud in your microwave, and make it really easy to clean.

If that doesn't work maybe try one of those Arm and Hammer fridge packs - sit it in there for a few days and see if the baking soda doesn't absorb the smell. Good luck!

Ive heard that outting a bowl of vinegar in the microwave and turning on for a minute or so will take out the smell.

DO NOT USE THE MICROWAVE,

Get a new microwave or have this one serviced (usually not worth the price). All the components have been over heated and the oven is now a fire hazard.

Wash out the microwave and all the kitchen surfaces with water and lemon juice (cooks use lemon to get rid of onion and garlic odor on their hands). Burn candles throughout your house. For some reason candles burn odors out of the air. Light one in every room in a safe place.

Needless to say opening windows and airing out the house will help. But it might be cold where you are.

If you have a filter to your furnace change it or wash it to help get rid of the odor.

Good Luck.

Toss the microwave. AIR , LOTS of AIR, will remove most of the odor. Their are odor removal contractors out there than can remove or reduce the odor immensely. They fog the room with different odor removers and air it out with fans betweend treatments. The best thing to do for smoke odor, after the fire is out, is to open all the windows/doors , use fans, AIR THE PLACE OUT. I worked for one of those contractors for a while. AIR. AIR. AIR.

You might want to contact your insurance company. The may be able to offer suggestions, and it's possible that they may cover getting rid of the smell. The link I added also has some information on the use of ozone generators to get rid of smoke smell from upholstery and fabrics.
