Not everyone does. those who don't are usually seen as the black sheep of society because this mass belief of how one should act and be has become truth for most. Sad but true. '-)

Might be a bit to scientific, but: we are social pack animals, like dogs or chimpanzees. I'm pretty sure that much of our behaviors have evolved accordingly; The packs that were most likely to survive were the ones in which no one did anything unusual that would seperate the pack.
Honestly, I despise people who are really worried about what people think, since to me it's a waste of time: society's rules are changing constantly.

Because when people realize other people are trying to be different or deviate from the norm they may ostracize them, and over the course of a lifetime we learn that the nail that sticks out will be hammered down.

Humans are tribal. Fitting into a group is an instinct, as it was required for safety and food thousands of years ago.
