Best way I know - type the town as your destination on the route finder on www.rac.co.uk,
It will confirm the location with you and give you all the options for the county it could be in...useful if there is more than one place called the same

You can use a county indicator or just type the city name in search of google, it will show. I do all the time for my county search.

Add the word 'shire' to it! here are some examples
York + shire = yorkshire
Oxford + shire = oxfordshire
Lincoln + shire = lincolnshire
northampton + shire = northamptonshire
etc
Im from Montpellier, but this dont work in french!
