What if the person you give it to wants to put the value in savings, cash will allow that, but someone here says that is a bad thing? Ok, so its better to have a gift in hand albeit the person could not pay his or her bills?

I think cash is a better gift. But I only would give it in certain cases....
Gift cards to me seem a bit cheesy. I'd make an exception if it's a gift card to something I know the recipient will absolutely love. (I know some youngsters with iPods and I know an iTunes card will not go to waste on them)
It seems to me that a gift card is the same thing as cash... you are showing them the exact dollar amount you spent unlike with other gifts. The main difference is that a gift card limits what you can do with the money.
Also, I think either cash or a gift card can seem like a lazy gift, and I generally don't give either. The one case I make for cash gifts is when I'm giving to teens and preteens. I haven't found one yet who doesn't loooooove getting a few bucks.
If you're an adult and giving to another adult and have to choose one of the two, that's the one case where I would go for a gift card. Giving cash to another adult seems odd to me.

I tend to feel that giving cash or a gift card is a way of saying "I don't know anything about you or what you like or are into". Most people love them though and think they are the best gift ever. But I do think a gift card is better than cash if those are your only options.

I think a gift card is a nice gift and better than just cash. With a gift card you know the person will get something for themselves and with money, sometimes we tend to use it on a bill or for something other than buying ourselves a gift. I always enjoy a gift card and that way you can shop the sales after Christmas.

well it all depends on who u are giving the gift to. presents are great for little kids and a lot of teens like cash(but some would rather have a present) but to me, a gift card that's coming from someone close to me tells me they didnt take the time and energy to go out and try to buy me something i might like. gift cards should defenitally be last resort.

I think a gift card is wonderful! You can go to your bank and get a bank card that can be used ANYWHERE a debit/credit & ATM card are used. If they want cash, they can just go to the ATM with the card, if they want to buy something at a specific store, they just use the card. It's the perfect gift for someone, in my humble opinion! I'd prefer getting the card as opposed to cash!

A gift card is fine. If it's for a store, make sure it is appropriate for the recipient.
I think cash is best for close family members that you know prefer money to a gift, and people that provide services for you throughout the year, like your babysitter, doorman, bldg. super, etc.

Gift cards seem so "impersonal". I would use them only as a last resort. It is so much nicer to receive as gift that someone took the time to pick out just for you! They have taken the time to know your likes and dislikes and get something special!

A gift card is fine, but please beware of a new scam where crooks write down the numbers of gift cards, or photograph them and wait a couple of days to see if it is activated then shop away online. Always use the last GC or one behind the counter.

a gift card by far at least the person receiving it will see you put some thought or idea into it like a single mom at work that would normally not spend money to go to Victoria secret to buy some sexy panties or something.

well the answer to ur question depends on who u r givin the gift card or cash to.if u r givin it to a small kid it would be better to give a gift bcoz kids like gifts(5--12years)...on the other hand if ur going to a teenager then u cangive cash as he/she can make better use of it than an kid.................
