So at the end of season 3 they're back together and Seth will be in Rhode Island in January and Marrissa dies. Then in the 1st episode of season 4 their relationship is weird and strained. Do we know what happened in between?

It's because Summer never really dealt with Marissa's death and she didn't want to talk about it. Talking to people from home just reminded her of Marissa, so that made it difficult for her to talk to Seth.

Maybe during there summer break something happend. I'm sure the directors will make a dvd of season 4 and explain what happened to them. By the way how did Marissa die because I missed that episode.

Their relationship is weird and strained because Summer is now studying abroad and they still haven't coped with Marissa's death.
But don't worry, they will patch things up rather fast and will become closer than ever.
