The media influences young people in several ways. At a basic level it functions as a way to interest them in certain products and convince them that they are cool and want to buy them. At a deeper level, it enforces what is "cool" (how they should dress, how they should speak, how they should act). It also enforces racial and gender based stereotypes. For some younger viewers this aids in the creation of how they perceive others who are different from them, in most cases over generalizing and falling victim to believing the stereotypes and false images that they see in the media.

(1) Perception and emotional response
Because young children have not developed the ability to distinguish between images on TV and reality, they are more easily impressed emotionally by intense visual and audial stimulus. Older children can later learn to distinguish media perceptions and have better control of their response to them.
But with younger children, any fear or anxiety they get can be very real to them. Even if you talk it over with them afterwards about images or ideas they may have seen on TV, their emotional impression may be greater than your ability to reason with them to distinguish a negative message, as in a problem or conflict, with a positive meaning, as in a related solution.
So many parents choose to refrain from exposing young children to intense media images.
(2) Advertising and Marketing
Since the technique was made famous by McDonald's, many companies deliberately market to children, using cartoons or happy songs and images of children being happy with their products. Once children see things brightly presented on TV, or also see that their friends have these toys, they can easily want the same things. Some kids more easily identify with and recognize mascots used for commercial ads rather than real life people, because the marketing is designed for that association.
Again, many parents choose to refrain from TV so children are not bombarded with ads, especially for plastic toys, etc.
