It's not the local tv stations that do it, but the networks. The networks do it because they are were shot in an are being broadcast in letterbox (widescreen) formate, so, you have the bars. It's not a gimmick, but the real thing.

I know this because I work for a network affiliate, and air many of those shows.

I do too and it seems like they do it to ER all the time. I hate that too. I keep thinking that something is wrong with the TV. I also hate it when the movies come out on DVD and they only have the widescreen edition.

It mimics the viewing ratio you see at the movie theater. It's called "letterbox". I like it. The TV stations don't do that. The program was produced that way.

Doesn't that mean that you are on the hd channel and the show you are watching is not hd?
