I have a 2000 Pontiac sunfire with over 200,000 miles on it and my transmission is about to go out. Should I purchase a refurbished transmission and have it intalled or should I have someone to rebuild my own transmission or should I purchase a brand new transmission?

With that many miles on the car, there are several factors to consider. Other than the transmission problem, what is the overall condition of the vehicle? Is the engine in good shape, or is it starting to show signs of age? How about the body and interior?

You have to look at the cost of repair vs the value of the vehicle after the repair. I would look at a used (low mileage)transmission, or a rebuilt one. I would not even consider a new transmission.

You are looking at spending anywhere from $800, or more for a used transmission, to about $1500 for a rebuilt one. If you think the car is worth spendig that much money on, take it to a qualified transmission shop, and get an estimate on the needed repairs!

Well a refurbished and a rebuild transmission is the same thing, most of the time you won't get your transmission back they swap them from one on the shelf, this makes for a faster turn around. now that we have that out of the way, a new transmission would cost about 2.5 times as much as a rebuilt one. Although a rebuilt transmission is only as good as the builder, I would recommend a repeatable repair shop with more than a 1 year warranty if you decide to have a rebuild one installed. A new transmission might only have a 1 year warranty as well, check on that. So it comes down to how much do you want to spend. your chances are equal on both sides of the coin.

another option is junk yard transmission which can be risky but something to consider if you are doing it your self or live where shop rates are low but it is a gamble and you could get the same trouble since it is just taken out of a car as is. Infiniliti are maybe not common enough for that to be practical.

After 200K miles I can't imagine how your transmission could be rebuilt. I wouldn't do a refurb, either, since you have no way of knowing what happened to it before. Go with a new one. (Pricey, though.)
