I am planning a month long trip to Europe in May and I have found that Rick Steve's book are the best overall. He doesn't just specify on larger more touristy places but the small places that really are the heart of Europe.

Switzerland- "If heaven isn't all that it is cracked up to be send me to Gimmelwald". Gimmelwald, Switzerland is a little tougher to get to that Grindlewald (more tourists) but the view there is suppose to be like no other. It was declared an avalanche zone, so developers really didn't want to build there. It is a small community of 130 but they have a youth hostel and bed and breakfasts there.

Italy- Anywhere in Tuscany, the Amalfi Coast (near Naples) or definitely the Cinque Terre which consist of 5 small towns with trains in between or you can hike for about 2 hours in between the towns.

Austria- It depends if you are looking for more of a ski resort or Tourist area. Hallstatt which is located on a lake and the only way to get there is by boat from the train station is a very small village (old salt mining town). Innsbruck is a great ski resort town and of course Vienna.

Croatia- Dubvronik is near the most south end of Croatia and it was war torn in the early nineties from Serbia. But since that was nearly 20 years ago it has become one of the most beautiful places with the old town right near the old castle harbor.

Of course there are the larger cities that if you never have been to Europe and never are going back you kind of need to see Rome, Amsterdam, Berlin, and Prague, Czech Republic has started to become very touristy which means that they have really established themselves from "Eastern" Europe.

It depends on where you want to go and how long but since Europe has a better transportation that U.S. from the Eurail that is the best option to get to most of these places.

Have an awesome trip!
