We put what we would have spent on cards in a charity box. Goes to a good cause and saves me having to write them all out !!

I'm not a big fan of card sending and I swear blind that Hallmark invent more reasons to send cards ech year "Happy Grandmother Day" "Happy Best Freind Day" "Happy Second Cousin Twice Removed Who Once Pushed Me Off My Bike Day"

However I think Christmas cards are nice to give and to recieve, it's not about the monetary aspect - If people just sent the face value of the cards then (assuming get as many as you would have sent) no-one is any better off! It's all about the sentiment and sometimes it's a really nice way to say 'I still think of you' to people you might have lost touch with over the years.

Share the festive spirit a little!

No that would be silly.

Imagine if eleven friends come to a Christmas party each with $50 in $5 bills and they all exchanged one bill with each of the other guests. They would all go home with $50. How long would it take for everyone to figure out they might as well keep their money in their own pocket?

Maybe if they gave the monetary value of the card to your favorite charity.

It's not the "monetary value" of the card. It's the idea that someone thought of you and wishes you well, and the general contact with people, that the card is a sign of. There is no monetary value that can be put on that.

You can Buy Christmas Cards for $1.00 A box, so I would rather get the card. It makes me feel loved that someone thought enough to pick out a card just for me.

Hell yes. Also, I'm a christmas card snob and always end up buying really expensive ones. Then, random people such as the photocopier guy, or the nursery school caretaker insist on giving you one of their crappy cheap numbers, and I have to reciprocate with one of my £1 a pop ones.

Sorry, little rant there. Yes. And the charity idea is good too.

No! Where's the soul in that? If you were perhaps suggesting people donated to charity instead of buying cards, I wouldn't do it, but I'd think it was a valid suggestion. Are you one of these girls who asks guys for the cash rather than a drink?

I like to get cards because at least I know that they are thinking about me and have made a effort to send one. Same reason i like to send them, sometime cards is the only communication people have with some relatives/old friends
