Why didn't New Zealand kept being a colony of Australia?

As far as I am aware, New Zealand and Australia were both colonies of Britain. New Zealand was separate. It has a distinct culture from Australia and was never controlled from Australia, its own parliament being started in the 1850's. As an aside, women got the vote in New Zealand in 1893, how enlightened.
