Because they can't touch it...they can't control it to their ends.

Your perspective is interesting but puzzling. The republicans I know don't hate either the Constitution or the First Amendment. They do tend to have a conservative view of both, which means they want to limit it to what it says. Legal folks often refer to this as the doctrine of original intent.

The liberal view is to consider the Constitution a "living document" that should be interpreted according to current standards, fashions, and mores. Their rationale is that the drafters of the great document could not anticipate all of the societal changes that have happened (and that will happen in the future). Therefore, we should not be "locked in" to their intent, given their limited scope of knowledge.

Conservatives counter that the liberal view overlooks the fact that there is a mechanism for changing the document built into it. It can be amended, but the process is fairly cumbersome and requires a supermajority of states to ratify, meaning that something more than a general consensus is required. To effect an amendment really requires an overwhelming public acceptance of the need for the proposed change.

Conservatives typically believe that liberals don't have this overwhelming support and they contend that the left short-circuits the whole process by appointing activist judges who will re-interpret the Constitution the "liberal way". Of course, the conservatives then go to battle in appointing their preferred judges who will interpret it the "conservative way".

We then end up with a massive power struggle to control the judicial branch via the appointment and confirmation process, leading to each side accusing the other of unduly politicizing the judiciary. We the public then buy in to this demonizing process and think the other side (no matter what the other side is) is evil, selfish, stupid, greedy, irrational, immoral, or hateful.

The GOP do not hate these things anymore then the Libs. It is only when issues that one doesn't like and they fight it do problems pop up. If you look at how The Dem's seem to be willing to jump up and shout for censorship at anything that they deem "irresponsible or hateful" you will see that this goes both ways.

Prior to Al(father of the Internet) Gore being vice president he was a senator, and his wife Tipper was known for demanding censorship upon the music industry. She founded the PRMC which wasted many resources to install the parental warnings we see on Cd's these days and was disappointed that she could not actually get performers like Prince to stay quiet.

Not just Rep.s But Dem.s also. Both parties are evil, look at every problem from every angle and try not to make up your mind based upon the opinions of Conservative radio talk show hosts or liberal political science professors.

Your welcome

What makes you think Republicans "hate" the first amendment? What have they done, to your knowledge, not what someone else has told you, to lead you to believe this nonsense? You really need to sit down and seriously consider your beliefs and how you came to that understanding, then try and educate yourself a little more to become better informed. Remember, knowledge is power; if you free your mind, your butt will follow.

Serious Question - I would like to know why none of the "elected class" is concerned with the constitution - Do they honestly think they are promoting domestic tranquility by forcing middle-class Americans to overlook not enforcing our laws and flooding our country with uncivilized criminals?

For the same reasons that Democrats hate it -- there are sections of the first amendment that some of their base doesn't care for.

You have to love Newt's recent comment that America cant defend itself properly with the current concept of 'free speech' in place.

Despicable people (mind you most of them are on their way to prison or a gay rights parade these days).
