Alta i am referring to the likes of windows server 2003. if you can give me general details on how they actually work it would be very much appriciated. thank you for your reply

They use different communication services and protocals to communicate with Domain locals, users and Groups. They are useful in auditing network traffic and setting allocations.
Best example is Novell.

That is very vague, what do you mean by network operating systems? Are you referring to OS's like 2003 server, linux and etc, or do you mean a network boot operating system, like where it boots the OS, normally linux off the network card?

Network operating system accesses resources on remote computers that run independent operating systems, but is not responsible for resource managment at remote locations.
Thats a deffinition from my college book. Hope it helps.
