I've moved into an apartment where the walls have been painted and the carpet cleaned twice. The smells of the previous tenent are still in the apartment.

How do I get rid of the odor?

If the smell is in the carpet, then sprinkle baking soda over it. This is a natural way to eat the odor, and remove it, not just mask it. Also any hard countertops and floors can be cleaned with white vinegar or some type of bleach solution, which will disinfect and kill odors as well. Finally, buy some Febreze, which claims to kill odors, and spray that on anything that you didn't touch with the baking soda or vinegar. This should get rid of most of the smells, though in the meantime burn some candles! Good luck!

Odors can wreak havoc on one’s nose and they are simply nerve wracking! Commercial deodorizers can help, but the truth is, where there's stink, there's something unpleasant that you need to clean up. Clean the troublesome area first, otherwise you are wasting your time because you'll only be masking the odor, rather than remove it. So, before you get frustrated or hire an expensive odor removal professional, let's take control of those odors before they take control of you. In many homes, odors come from kitchens, laundry, pets, dirty carpets, bathrooms, and garbage. And in most cases can be dealt with with some simple home remedies.

I was once married to a man that cleaned trucks for a living. When they had a BAD smell, as in a truck full of frozen peas that had set in the sun for two weeks, they bought a big can of cheap coffee and sprinkled it everywhere and locked it up for a day. When they rinsed out the coffee it was all fine. I would also suggest laying down your own scents. Cook your favorite spicy foods. Bake something. Buy flowers. Don't cover it up with air fresheners unless you really like that smell but bring good smells in. Squeeze some oranges for breakfast. Two weeks from now the smell will be gone.

Borax is the best, then baking soda. (laundry borax). Also, get yourself a vaccuum cleaner that's powerful enough to suck up a 3 year old. A good vaccuum got rid of dog smell from my carpet.

Don't use Febreeze, it has that signature smell of 'I never wash my clothes, but I spray them with this instead so that people think I'm clean'.
