Lobsters are primarily scavengers [citation needed], feeding on molluscs and decaying animal matter, recent studies have shown that they primarily feed on live fish, dig for clams, sea urchins, and feed on algae and eel-grass. They occasionally eat other lobsters, too. Lobsters grow throughout their lives and are long-lived.

Lobsters are cannibals and also eat dead fish heads placed in lobster pots. There is a slot at the bottom of the pot that allows underage lobsters to eat for free until they molt and form new shells too large to fit through the slot. Then they pay with their lives. Very large lobsters are set free as breeding stock. Lobsters are eaten by visitors to Maine, etc. and are now flown all over the country where they are gladly invited to elegant dinners.
