The best routes to take are to research the process of starting a business as well as the industry you're interested in.

I recommend checking out the SBA, Entrepreneur, The Start Up Journal & Nolo. All 4 are great informational resources for the new/small business owner. I posted links for you in the source box.

Associations may be a good avenue to explore. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* Bookkeeping & Tax Preparation: Start & Build a Prosperous Bookkeeping, Tax, & Financial Services Business by Gordon P. Lewis
* Start & Run a Bookkeeping Business by Angie Mohr
* How to Open your own In-Home Bookkeeping Service 2nd Edition by Julie Mucha-Aydlott

There are plenty of free informational resources out there. Check the source box for links to articles.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

well you best bet is to advertise in the local paper. use a computerised package such as sage, i assume you are proficient in both manual and computerised bookkeeping.

work out what terms you want to offer, ie monthly or weekly bookkeeping services depending on the volumn of paperwork that is involved. also state whether you will be doing wages and vat returns if applicable. I assume you will be home and available for travel during the day and not after work hours.

after that. get registered with the inland revenue that you are self employed by completing a form CWF1 which you can download from the inland revenue website www hmrc.gov.uk. ensure you register withing 3 months of the end of the first month you start trading else u risk £100 fine.
