My friend has a first generation Saturn SL1 trim with a SOHC LI4 LKD engine that wont last much longer. He wants to swap it with the more powerful DOHC SL2 trim engine. Does anyone know a WEBSITE where he can buy a used Saturn engine? don't say junkyards, because we've looked, and apparaently thats not a website. (durr) Thanx in advance.

We've already found out that the engine mounts are identical and the engines are nearly the same size, but we know that it will fit iin his car. Also, we're not going to put any money into his current engine to repair it, mainly because he says he wants a more powerful engine anyways.

You can try forums such as www.saturnfans.com, depending on where you live sixthsphere.com may be able to help you. You can also try ebay and various remanufactured engines websites, but you'll pay a pretty penny for those. What is the engine doing? Please be aware, that depending on the year, you may run into mounting issues of an engine of a different year within the same generation. You will also want to replace the computer, wiring harness and insturment cluster. If it's an automatic transmission, I recommend also swapping the transmission to a DOHC, as the transmissions are ratioed differently. I considered doing this to my '95, but to do it correctly is quite involved and you're rarely happy with the results if you don't address every little issue. There will also be more body flex around corners as it's a higher horsepower engine, you'll probably want to remove the SL1 rear subframe and install a SL2 subframe from a junk yard, if you're able to find one in reasonable condition. SL1's don't have a rear sway bar.

If he just wants a more powerful engine, he should just buy a SL2. It's going to cost him more in time and labor and actual cost to do an engine swap properly than it will to just buy a 1st gen SL2, or hell even a 96-98 SL2. They're dirt cheap. No one buys or sells for blue book value of these cars because no one is willing to pay blue book value.
