Each of those genres has artists within it that could be considered appropriate as well as inappropriate. It's more a judgement call - whatever they want to listen to, try to encourage them to listen to positive artists, and if they insist on listening to artists with a more "controversial" message, make sure you talk to them about it so they know that certain messages they hear may not be the most positive.

I'm the mother of two teens, ages 16 and 13. They were brought up in a home that listens to all sorts of music. They also know that there are some inappropriate songs out there, but it is not indicitive of the genre as a whole. They listen with open minds, yet are mature enough to separate the good from the not so good.

The music that they choose to listen to. All musical avenues should be open to them. A proper musical education should include music from all genres, from traditional classical to the hardest thrash metal or rap. Exposure to the widest variety possible will allow them to experience the range of music available and make their choice based on the widest possible variety.

I believe that teenagers should try to listen to a wide variety of music. Musical diversity encourages open-minded thought processes by exposing them to different points of view.
