My partner wants to call our daughter Edam after the town in the Netherlands. I think it is silly because the name is also used for a cheese.
I want to call the child Bazalgette after Sir Joseph Bazalgette the engineer who helped save London from Cholera epidemics in the nineteenth century. My partener likes Bazalgette but still wants to call our daughter Edam.
I don't want to give the child two first names. Especially because Bazalgette is hard to spell.
So should I give in and name the baby Edam or just call her Bazalgette anyway?

You are joking about calling the poor child Bazalgette aren't you???
I suspect you are joking about Edam too.
I think Gorgonzola-Brie would be a nice name for your little cheese....

Personally, I don't like either, but I wouldn't use Bazalgette as a first name (for one, because of the reason you already stated, that it is difficult to spell). I like Edam better. It sound a little like Eden, which is a pretty name for a girl. Why not go with Edam for a first name and Bazalgette for a middle name?

Edam Bazalgette

As interesting as Bazalgette is, you need to think about how the child will grow up with their name. I have a name that is easily made fun of. Having a name that means something is important to all parents, have you considered the middle name of your parents or grandparents. You also should keep in mind how difficult it may be to spell certain names in grade Primary. How is this name pronounced by the way??? If i were to choose I would choose Edam

Is this a wind up? you are intending to send your child to school aren't you? Do you think she'll get upset when children call her cheesy? Then as an adult everytime she says her name people will furrow their eyebrows thinking they misheard and she will go, "you know, like the cheese". As for the other name, you will be condemning her to a life of spelling out her name everytime she mentions it, she'll have to correct people's pronunciation all the time and she will forever have to explain where you plucked the name from - wierd names can be really hard work - think about it. On the other hand its your choice and if thats the name you want then she will find a way to make it work for her, and she might love it, nobody will ever know until she's old enough to tell us.

Why are people suggesting the name Adam- read the question... the baby's a GIRL! I don't personally like either, but if you do then that's obviously more important. However, i don't think it fair to call her just what you want, without the approval of the father. Seeing as you can't agree on these two names, why not come up with a different name you BOTH like. =) good luck and congratulations.

I like that you guys are going for originals names, but "Edam" is not only a cheese, but can also sound like something else perverted, and I think it will invite other kids to harrass her. Bazalgette is very pretty, and sounds like a unique girls name ,and not like anything else you might not want it to sound like. People might have problems with pronouncing it, but that is not so bad. My name is Kirsten and I have had to tell people how to pronounce it and spell it a lot too, but was never made fun of because of it. I always liked that I got a little extra attention and it helped start conversations too.

Try and see it from the perspective of the child. She's the one who'll have grow up bearing this name. Would YOU want to be called Edam or for that matter, Bazalgette? I think not!

either way this child is Fxxxd
seriously edam even if it wasnt named after cheese it would still be a horrible name for a child, if you want your kids be beautifull give them a chance and at least give them decent names, stand your ground on the edam one but definately rethink the bazalgette cant you call it joseph??
