I have a gateway laptop and I think I have a shift f key setting wrong.

Check you keyboard setting in Control Panel and Choose US 101 keybord. Should correct things for you, if some program automatically choose something else.

If the wrong letter is part of the embedded keypad on thhe keyboard make sure the "NumLk" Number Lock key is Off.

Someone could be pulling a prank on you...I had something like that on my computer once(put your cursor in the top left of the screen if this is the case)

Be careful that you don't have a paper clip or staple under your keyboard. This will throw much of your setting off.

Some liquid has been dumped onto the key board..

If so you will have to get it repaired...
