It's clear that the morale of our troops is at an all time low. This fact has nothing to do with liberals. The military is being asked to do a job without the proper manpower to get it done.
The military announce today that it is 100,000 men short for the next Iraqi rotation. The commitment of the Guard and Reserves has been exhausted. They need another 100,000 active duty personnel to meet current troop commitments, which was too low to secure Iraq in the first place.
Prior to the invasion, the military notified the White House it needed another 400,000 active duty troops to secure post-Saddam Iraq. The White House choose the path of least resistance to fill that need: train Iraqis. Perhaps that was a logical decision, but it didn't work. The result is we are losing the peace in Iraq.
The question now is: What do we do at this point? Do we cut and run, leaving Iraq a bloody battlefield of civil war? Or, do we make the commitment with our own forces to bring law and order to Iraq?
Rightly or wrongly, we invaded Iraq and removed the system of authority. Do we owe it to the Iraqi people to establish law and order with a government that serves their needs, not ours?
