After you have learned something, try to develop your own work. People will appreciate your effort and maybe support your sacrifice by giving you a good opportunity or funding your education.

A degree certainly helps and most people applying for the jobs will have at least an undergrad, many will have master's degrees. If you can't go to university or you want some bonus points on your resume you'll have to volunteer or get an internship. Contact all your local media outlets and see how you can help. Even if you're not writing at first, you'll get to know the right people and when something comes up, ask that they consider you.
