mitzy is correct. The name of the chain of mountains stretched along the floor of the Atlantic Ocean is the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.

A few interesting details:

1. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge is a mostly underwater mountain range that runs from almost the North Pole to the Antarctic Bouvet Island.

2. The highest peaks of this mountain range extend above the water mark, to form islands. There are only nine islands in the range, of which Iceland, the Azores and Bermuda are but three.

3. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge forms part of the global mid-oceanic ridge system and, like all mid-oceanic ridges, is thought to result from a divergent (spreading apart) boundary that separates tectonic plates: the North American Plate from the Eurasian Plate in the North Atlantic, and the South American Plate from the African Plate in the South Atlantic.

4. All of these plates are still moving apart, so the Atlantic is growing at the ridge, at a rate of about 5-10 centimeters per year in East-West direction.

5. The ridge was discovered by Bruce Heezen and Marie Tharp in the 1950s. The discovery of this ridge led to the theory of seafloor spreading and general acceptance of Wegener's theory of continental drift.

6. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge is the largest mountain range known to man.
