My daughter's boyfriend noticed a large puddle of oil on the garage floor and called my daughter at work. When she looked at her car, there was no oil. A co-worker helped her add some oil, but 'there was oil spraying everywhere'. What could be the cause? Is it worth repairing? and if so, are the repairs expensive?

Improperly installed oil drain plug. (Cross threaded/hand tight only can cause a big mess)
Filter gasket left on the block when installing a new filter. (Also causes a big mess, and can spray depending on the location of the filter, as oil can get on belts from the oil filter in some vehicles)
Front or rear main crank seal. (Doesn't usually "Spray" unless the front main seal is blown and oil is draining on the belts)
Oil pump/sending unit/oil lines. (As these are usually under pressure, it can spray)
Cam cover gasket. (doesn't usually spray, can if oil leaked onto the belts)

Just some things off the top of my head.

Make/Model/Year would be helpful. Also the location of the leak would be helpful in pinpointing it, such as left side of the car, right side of the car, front or rear side, etc.

Yes, they can be expensive. Front & rear main crank seals can be difficult and time consuming to access and repair. A major oil leak doesn't usually develop suddenly. What was the last action taken on the car?

I suspect that the source of the oil is probably the oil sending unit. It is screwed into the block, but I have had two go bad in my lifetime. Look at that. There are several other sources like main bearing seals, transfer passage through the head, and a stopped up pcv valve. None of these however have ever "sprayed" oil like you describe. All of these conditions can be repaired. There is a chance that the block could have a crack in it, but that is remote. I would bet on the oil sending unit. Good luck.

Check the easy stuff first. Sending unit oil filter etc But if that's not it we're lookin' at a cracked block or a blown head gasket. mucho bucks.

it could be the oil pressure sending unit or the oil filter. check it out
