fix it

The same thing happened to my son's pick-up truck a couple of month's ago. He had only paid about $2,600 for this used pick-up truck...it ran very well, it looked OK. But, he did not check the radiator fluid. It went dry and he had big-time problems. He messed up the engine. He wound up selling the truck and got $2,300 for it, amazingly. In your case it depends upon the extent of the damage and the value of your car. If it overheated but did not do any damage to your car, then, yes...like the previous answerer said, you need to fix the radiator problem. As repairs go, this should be relatively inexpensive and easy. However, if the overheating caused internal engine problems then you are going to have a big-time bill and headache. The best advice I can give you is go to a mechanic you can absolutely trust. Have him check it out and give you an estimate. If it turns out to be a costly repair, then you very well may want to go on and get rid of it and get something else. It always seemed to me, after having extensive repairs, the car was never the same after that, never ran as well, and continued to have more problems. But, try to get a couple of opinions if you can and talk to friends about what they would do. It is hard to give you a specific answer to your problem without knowing more details. Good luck.

If you didn't drive while overheated for an extended period of time or until the engine quit, just get it checked out by a reliable mechanic. You may have let it idle in heavy traffic too long, your antifreeze may have been low, your thermostat may have stuck closed ... it could be any one of several possibilities! Remember, the tow guy is usually a guy who's looking to sell auto service ... whether you actually need it or not!

It could be your radiator or any of the hoses or anything attached to the radiator. However if you drove on it too long with it overheating, you could have cracked the head gasket. Those things are super hard to fix and take a lot of labor, plus they are expensive.. just hope its the radiator or something attached to it. It could be around 100 (if its just the hoses) to 400 (if its the radiator.. I just bought a radiator and my boyfriend fixed it.. the radiator w/o any labor to put it in was about 175-200 alone. So add labor and any other parts, it would be more)... if its the headgasket, you're looking at 1500 easy.

Cars today have aluminum heads which usually warp when they get overheated causing the head to leak around the gasket and result in compression loss. Do a compression test on the engine it is the bast way to determine if there is a problem. If the head is warped you can take it to a machine shop and have it shaved so it will fit right again.

chech the dip stick to see if it has water droplets at the top and down to oilmark, This is a blown head gasket . and or cracks in head steam is a power full force to 14lbs cooling systems, it burns seals and blows out gasket, also bottom side of oil cap will have water droplets on it, have cooling system pressure tested,

1 wait till it cools down
2 top up water and oil and try to start
3 if motor will not turn its probably seazed = new motor time
4 if it turns, run it for 30 mins check oil and water for levels and mixing, if oil in water or water in oil, probably head gasket and not hard to change in most cars.
5 if after 30 min everything ok, drive and keep and eye on temp guage, check water and oil after each drive for next few days
