The simple thing to do would be to just go ahead and give him a gift card. If you want to get him something that you can wrap and put under the tree, try to think of something he likes/needs.

-----There are lots of nice things you can find for under $20...be creative and remember to think of his likes/dislikes and any hobbies he has.
