There is a very informative article at Wikipedia.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indie_music
When I think of indie, I think of pretty much anybody featured on Pitchfork. http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/page/features
And no, the Killers are not indie. The very definition of an indie is they are signed to an independent record label, which they are not.

Way back probably late 70s Early 80s a lot of bands were getting signed to major labels, if you checked in NME or Melody Maker magazines they always had a seperate chart for bands signed to Independent record labels...
This was called the Indie Chart, the name has kind of stuck but as for the musical genre this is a very difficult question, it could be anything from country and western to dance/ punk / metal.. whatever.. as long as they are signed to an indie label..
It is nowadays associated with most trendy guitar based bands, but most of these are actually signed to major labels !!!!
So they are not exactly INDIE!!!

Indie isn't that simple. It's like saying what is Dance music. Indie I would describe as a larger grouping of guitar based genres with lyrical roots in everyday life.

Don't know about these days but indie to me used to be bands like Happy Mondays. Don't know if you could call today's bands truely "indie".
