Strength of Japanese Army during war :

5 midget submarines,

Casualties:
55 airmen, 9 submariners killed and 1 captured,
29 planes destroyed,
4 mini-submarines sunk
United States Naval Institute photographic analysis conducted in 1999 indicates one entered the harbor and successfully fired a torpedo into the West Virginia, in what appears to have been the first shot by the attacking Japanese. The final disposition of this submarine is unknown.

I'll agree with Isis up to the one fired part......65 years later there is still no conclusive proof anyone got off a shot......there is a picture taken from a Japanese plane that MAY show a torpedo track headed for California from a blob like area in the water that MAY be a mini sub.....

oh yeah....in case it's not clear: the subs that headed into Pearl Harbor, were attacked just off the entrance and sunk there were 2 man mini subs "piggybacked" into attack range by larger Japanese 'fleet" subs which stayed miles off shore
